First Stage: Opera Directing


The Royal Opera House is offering the opportunity to see how an opera director brings a show to life, by hosting a three-week placement on our upcoming revival of Jonathan Kent`s production of Puccini`s Manon Lescaut, this October/November.

If you are looking to develop a career in theatre or opera directing, this placement will give you the opportunity to be in the heart of one of the busiest theatres in the UK with an international reputation.

Staff Directors

Description of Department:

The Staff Directors office looks after the freelance Opera Directors, Assistant Directors, Choreographers and Fight Directors who come to work on our productions.We serve as the link between the Royal Opera House and the freelance artistic teams that come to work with us sharing production information with all the relevant people and departments.

Description of work to be undertaken:

You will attend all of the rehearsals of Manon Lescaut in which you will observe the rehearsal process to broaden your understanding of how an opera production is put on.

Duration:

3 weeks

Hours:

48 hours per week, dependant on the rehearsal schedule.

Location:

Covent Garden.

Minimum Entry Requirements:

Aged 18+.

Selection Criteria:

Proven interest in theatre or operadirecting.

The ability to read music is an advantage, but not essential.

An understanding of backstage theatre operations is an advantage.
